Wardrobe Refashion Take 1

Scratch the curtain idea - for now. It's still too dang hot to do anything with wool.

I got this big daddy shirt at Goodwill and had a hankering for turning into a skirt a'la this inspiration. You see, I'm going with 13 of my favorite girls to Windy Gap Women's Weekend on Friday to laugh, worship, sing, eat, relax, blob, zip-line, ride horses, and reminisce on all the years I went in my yester-year. Ellie Holcombe is returning this year to lead worship and perform, and my possee and I (yes, possee can be used to describe 14 mostly-stay-at-home-suburban white girls) loved her skirt/boot style almost as much as her music last year. But first the before:

It was too easy for someone out there not to have come up with a much better tutorial than the very backwards way that I put it together (ghe.tto). All I did was cut off the top (measuring the height from the bottom that I wanted the length to be), and cut an A-line the width of 1/2 of my waist measurement (more would be ideal so that you could pucker the fabric with an elastic casing).

Cut the sides open to create your A-line. Cut the bottom straight across. Hem the top (add elastic in a casing if you so choose), make your side seams, and hem the bottom. Somewhere in the mix, stitch up the button panel on each side of the buttons.

Viola. I made the mistake of getting a bit ambitious and creating a waiste band with the leftover sleeves, and it now fits a little wonky since the sleeves and stripes weren't cut along the bias, but no biggie. I'll probably just cover it up with a shirt so my ghetto sewing skills are once again hidden! Mwa-ha-ha!!!

Makes me wanna play the gee-tar.

Being the novice (and wimp) that I am, I will admit that I have never sewn a zipper. Mix this with type B sewer, this skirt had to go OVER my head like a dress. When I told this to my friend Whitney today, she said that I wasn't right. I'm not. BUT, in the process of putting my skirt on like a dress, I made a discovery.

That the circumference of my chest and my waist is essentially the same . That the skirt can also be a shirt. An accidental (and somewhat depressing) discovery.

Off to do sit-ups.

Genius! I'm totally going to copycat this and soon. I absolutely LOVE that it works as a top too! You're inspiring me...

Cute!!

Okay, now I'm just waiting patiently for Tim to get rid of one of his shirts.

Actually the circumference of your HIPS and bust are the same, which makes you a lovely hourglass shape. The waist part is sitting above the bust. Nice work, and thanks for the tutorial. I'm adding you to my faves.

Wow! Thanks y'all - I'd love to hear how yours turn out when you give it a shot. To anonymous - I appreciate the reassurance, but a post-baby belly (albeit 2 years) has changed everything in a not so hour-glassy way. ;)

actually it's fairly normal for our hips and chest to be close or the same measurement. It just means you are proportional and it will make your measurements easier to remember.
I think your skirt is cute. I like that you cut the hem even. It sort of bugs me when people make skirts out of shirts and don't do that as it looks like pajamas.
Also if you do it again you could sew only part way up the buttons and use that as an easy way to get it on. still wouldn't need a zipper
Just a thought. And then you

I appreciate all of the compliments! Everyone is so kind to assume the waistband really sits on the hips - sadly, it DOES fit snugly around my belly button as well as my chest. Will be the last time to include such information in a blog post. At least the people following it assume the best in me. :)

The skirt is super cute, but I love this as a shirt! I think I'm going to make one for that purpose :) Thanks for the great tutorial.

Would you please tell me where you found those fabulous boots? Love them! Thanks!!

Thanks Ana - I got them at one of those shoe warehouses (DSW or Off Broadway) last year for around $40. They must have been that cheap because they are ridiculously hard to get on. Anyway, they're made by Restricted (which is an appropriate name for the product)!
